Call for Papers: Public Symposium on Global Economic Crisis and Development

Call for Papers:"The global economic crisis and development- the way forward".
We would like to inform you that UNCTAD is organizing its first Public Symposium on 18-19 May 2009

UNCTAD's first Public Symposium aimed at providing a multi-stakeholder platform to debate and deepen the understanding of the impact of the global economic and financial crisis is keen to achieve an unprecedented level of inclusiveness among its participants.
For this purpose, we are launching herewith a call for papers. The overall aim of this call for papers is to gather your views and feedback on your position(s) with regard to the main issues to be addressed at the symposium.
All substantive contributions will be made available on the website. Those of publishable quality will go into the compendium to be disseminated to a wider audience including networks of civil society organizations, private sector, parliamentarians, member States and academia. All submitting authors will be acknowledged.
Contributions to be submitted should comply with the following criteria:
Link with the overall theme of the symposium "The global economic crisis and development - the way forward"
Focus on one or more of the key topics up for discussion;
- The global economic crisis - its causes and its multiple impacts. The debate will consider, in particular the effects on developing countries in the area of trade, investment, food security and jobs.
- Assessing existing responses to the crisis at international, regional and national levels - limitations and best practices. In addition to examining the effectiveness of stimulus packages implemented in some countries, the debate will address multilateral efforts to find solutions to the crisis, including the G-20 Summit outcome and regional initiatives.
- Proposals for the way forward - obstacles and opportunities. The debate will include opportunities arising from the upcoming United Nations conference on the world financial crisis and its impact on development, and longer-term issues such as the reform of the international financial architecture and global economic governance.
  • Propose practical suggestions and concrete recommendations for the way forward
  • Be written in English or French or Spanish
  • Not exceed 5 A4 pages
  • Should have as the subject line: Inputs for UNCTAD Public Symposium 2009
